Smith earns prize from Wake Forest

Justin Smith of Kings Mountain was recently awarded the Christian Cappelluti Prize in Music at
Wake Forest University.

A rising junior and political science major, Smith is also working toward a minor in music with a
concentration in organ performance and church music.

Dan Locklair, professor of music and composer-in-residence, recommended Smith, whose award
was approved by the entire music faculty at Wake Forest.

The Cappelluti Prize is a living memorial to the Wake Forest alumnus who died at age 22. Selection is
based on outstanding musical merit, promise and passion. In addition to the distinction of being named
a Cappelluti Scholar, the prize carries a generous monetary award.

A 2004 graduate of Kings Mountain High School, Smith is a William Louis Poteat Scholar at Wake Forest.
He has been named to the dean's list each semester he has attended Wake Forest.

In addition, he serves as chancel choir accompanist and student organist at the Wake Forest Baptist Church,
as organist and coordinator of music for the Wake Forest University Episcopal Student Fellowship, and as
chapel organist for most services of University Worship.

This summer, he is the interim organist at First United Methodist Church in Stanley.
